1. For The Culture Seeker In You: Ayutthaya
Just 80 km north of Bangkok is the UNESCO world heritage site of Ayutthaya that once served as the capital of this prosperous Siamese kingdom. Remnants of past glory are still scattered around this town in the form of ancient Buddhist temples, statues and stupas in Khmer and Sukothai styles.
Perhaps the most famous sight from the Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Site is the Buddha Head embedded between tree roots at the Wat Maha That. Also be sure to take in the 17th century Wat Chai Watt Hanaram and the Wat Phra Si Sanphet, located in the palace gardens.
It is best to go on a guided tour from Bangkok with plenty of rest stops and an expert guide. If you wish to explore on your own, you can hire a bike or even a tuktuk with a driver who will double up as an informal guide.

Here are some guided tours we recommend specially for the over-fifties traveller:
Day Trip with Boat tour (Viator)
Bus Tour with River Cruise (Get your Guide)
2. If You Are A Wildlife Enthusiasts: Khao Yai National Park
Thailand's first and oldest national park, Khao Yai is another UNESCO world heritage site for those seeking fresh mountain air, easy hikes, stunning waterfalls and scenic vistas. If you are lucky, you might even catch sight of the native fauna like elephants, wild boars and the super elusive gibbon.
Then there are the 280 bird species at this national park, which means you will never be truly alone here. And if you are feeling really adventurous, then sign up for a night safari with an official ranger guide to see the forest come to life in the darkness.

4. Love Being In Nature? This is for you: Bang Krachao
This manmade island on a bend of the Chao Phraya River is also known rightly as Bangkok’s Green Lungs (although it is technically not within Bangkok but in the neighbouring Phra Pradaeng District).
Just follow the lead of locals and rent a bike or take a walk through this lush park – some might even call it a forest – keeping your eyes and ears tuned for native birds. The Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park and Botanical Garden sits at its heart, filled with charming canals and calming birdsong.
There’s even a birdwatching tower for avian enthusiasts, while foodies can have their fill of the freshest Thai dishes at the Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market.

5. For Those Animal Lovers: Elephant Sanctuary
Get up close and personal with rescue elephants at Thai Elephant Refuge run by the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand or the Somboon Legacy Foundation. Watching these gentle giants as they go through their daily feed and walk is sure to leave you with a happy smile on your face.
Just remember that many elephant sanctuaries and nature parks may claim to be ethical, but allow tourists to bathe, feed and even ride the animals. Choose wisely and visit only those which are truly hands-off when it comes to elephant interactions.
